Wild Heerbrugg T160
A variation of the Wild T16 without the vertical circle.
Product details: Wild Heerbrugg T160 | Wild Heerbrugg | Simple theodolite | Survey | Material: Brass
Essentially this is a regular T16 without the vertical circle. Only about 500 of these instruments were produced and it is not hard to see why. As a theodolite it can only be used for measuring horizontal angles which makes it unusable for height determinations. This specific one has the added levelling bubble attached to the telescope turning it into a tilting level with a very accurate horizontal scale. Still, even for this purpose it must have been an expensive instrument not costing much less than the regular T16 which, with the added level, can do exactly the same ánd vertical angles.
All in all as a theodolite it is not the most accurate either. The T16 was never renowned for its accuracy, even the much simpler T0 is more accurate (and compact). The only advantage the T16 had was that both horizontal and vertical scales could be read at the same moment and without a micrometer. Half that advantage is also missing in the T160.
The instrument is 'as new' and seems hardly ever used. Even the original screwdriver / tool is still with it. This specific one was sold by Catry in Lille, France. The firm still exists and still sells topographic equipment, amongst others Leica.
