This is a small level that I came across and couldn't resist buying. The level does not have a tribach but can be stoop up on the stand as it does in the photographs. Alternatively the thread can be fixed to a tribach, tripod or similar. However, that part is missing. There is a fine adjustment for tilting the level making this a true dumpy level. The instrument can be completelly disassembled. The telecope can be reversed as can the level. However, rather than as with the Lenoir type in my collection, this level allows the level to be centred and locked in place. All in all it is a sophisticated instrument which probably dates from the middle to the late 19th century.
The instrument was made by Ertel & Sohn from Muchen in Germany, a famous German instrument maker. When obtained the instrument was missing a few parts, most notably the leveling vial. The levelling vial now shown on the instrument is an early 20th century or maybe late 19th century level from a small machinists level. It is therefore not period or technically correct but fitted the instrument perfectly and is good enough for showing the device. As stated the mounting is missing as well and so was a small locking pin for the reversible telescope. The box that came with it also does not seem original but it does fit all the pieces that I have.
